Portugal
The story
Since the dictatorship ended and free elections began in 1975, Portugal has had one of Europe's most stable party systems: the centre-left Socialists (PS) and centre-right Social Democrats (PSD) have alternated as the largest party in every election, and no other party has ever held the prime minister's office. The Portuguese Communist Party (PCP), dating to 1921 and among Western Europe's strongest, has often topped ten percent, remains orthodox — hammer and sickle still on its logo — and is the only Portuguese party that has declined to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine, instead echoing Kremlin language about a "special operation."
2019– · Chega breaks the taboo
The legacy of the fascist Estado Novo dictatorship made right-wing extremism taboo in Portugal for decades, one of the last European countries without a successful radical right party — until Chega! ("Enough!"), founded in 2019 by former TV football commentator André Ventura, entered parliament that same year with one seat, then won 7% in 2022, 18% in 2024 and almost 23% in 2025, becoming one of the three major parties, though still outside government. In the 2026 presidential election André Ventura came second with 33% in the run-off. National conservative with clear populist traits, Chega campaigns hardest on crime, corruption and immigration; Ventura has been sharply critical of Islam and Roma communities and drawn frequent accusations of racism, prompting counter-demonstrations under the slogan "there is no racism in Portugal."
Economically, Chega is right-leaning: it first called for a much smaller state and lower taxes, but now pairs tax cuts with promises of higher wages and pensions. Socially conservative — Ventura personally opposes both abortion and bullfighting without seeking to ban either — and softly eurosceptic, the party has split the Portuguese right: PSD has repeatedly rejected formal cooperation, calling some of its positions xenophobic and racist.
